Mental Health and Addiction qualifications

Foundation Skills and Core Competencies

Careerforce has revised the Foundation Skills (Level 2) and Core Competencies (Level 3) qualifications so they better meet the needs of the Mental Health and Addiction sector. Three new mental health and addiction unit standards are now available as elective unit standards. It is possible to complete one of these as part of Foundation Skills, and all of them as part of Core Competencies.


National Certificate in Mental Health and Addiction Support (Level 4)

The new National Certificate in Mental Health and Addiction Support (Level 4) has been designed for learners who wish to enter mental health and addiction support work, or who already work as paid or unpaid mental health and addiction support workers under supervision. People completing this qualification will meet the requirements of the Ministry of Health’s (2008) Let's get real framework at the essential level of performance.

This qualification has optional strands in Addiction, Family/Whanau, and Kaupapa Maori.

National Diploma in Mental Health Support Work (Level 6)

The National Diploma in Mental Health Support Work (Level 6) is designed for people who have already developed or wish to develop a higher level of competence in mental health support work than is covered by the National Certificate.

Training Grants and Scholarships

Mental Health Support Worker Training Grant

Mental health support workers can access a study grant to fund their tuition fees for the National Certificate and National Diploma in Mental Health Support Work.

Le Va Mental Health and Addiction Scholarships

The purpose of the Le Va mental health and addiction scholarships is to increase the number of Pacific people working in mental health and addictions and enhance the knowledge and skills of the current Pacific workforce. The scholarships cover fees, mentoring support and general expenses associated with training. Applications close 8 October 2010.
