Brain Injury Support (Level 4)
The National Certificate in Brain Injury Support (Level 4) is designed for support workers who support people after brain injury in a residential or community-based rehabilitation organisation.
Holders of this qualification are able to demonstrate knowledge and skills in rehabilitation of a person after brain injury, the anatomy of the brain, effects on a person after brain injury, and provision of assistance to a person after brain injury.
The compulsory section recognises knowledge and skills related to the effects of brain injury on cognitive function, life roles, and fatigue, and the identification and implementation of strategies to assist a person after brain injury.
Elective Set A provides opportunities for candidates to select standards that recognise the skills and knowledge related to their specific role or context, including brain injury in children; the effects of brain injury on the physical function, behaviour, communication, and psychological wellbeing of a person after brain injury; and the implementation of strategies to assist a person after brain injury.
Elective Set B allows for the inclusion of relevant Level 3 standards in mental health and addiction support, and/or standards relating to supporting a consumer to take prescribed medication, or to maximise independence.
It is recommended that candidates hold the National Certificate in Community Support Services (Core Competencies) (Level 3), or have equivalent knowledge and skills, before enrolling in this qualification.
Holders of this qualification may wish to proceed to qualifications in the areas of Team Management or Senior Support for the Health, Disability and Aged Support sectors.

Delivery of this Qualification
The Brain Injury National Certificate is currently being piloted. ABI Rehabilitation and Laura Fergusson Trust Canterbury have contracts with Careerforce to pilot the delivery of this qualification. The qualification is made up of 74 credits and has a completion timeframe of 15 months. The cost is $2500 and includes education sessions and assessment, including a visit by the assessor to the workplace.
