SpeedMeet 2019 is attracting big employers from the health and wellbeing sectors to participate in the events being run across Aotearoa in August and September.

Careerforce, the industry training organisation (ITO) for the health and wellbeing sectors, is working with other ITOs and the Ministry of Education to bring SpeedMeet to even more locations in 2019. Employers, secondary school students and job seekers are invited to participate.

Based on the concept of speed-dating, employers meet with each person for six minutes to find out about each other. Each party then notes whether they’d like to know more. Matches are then put in touch with each other after the event to progress the discussion.

Employers have started signing up including Geneva Healthcare, a large healthcare services provider who are attending SpeedMeet events in Auckland and Wellington.

Chloe Stone, Recruitment Consultant at Geneva Healthcare says, “We have been to these types of events before and I believe it is worthwhile to show students and job searchers what the healthcare industry can offer them.”

“A lot of students don’t think of Support Work as a career, when in fact it is a great stepping stone into the healthcare industry. This role allows you to gain exposure and build your skills and experience while gaining NZQA equivalent qualifications.”

Geneva Healthcare is a proponent of on-the-job training and has been working with Careerforce in supporting them to upskill their staff to achieve nationally recognised qualifications.

Chloe says they are looking for a variety of roles such as Caregivers and Community Support Workers. She shares the main attributes they are looking for, “we look for caring individuals who have a real passion for giving back to their community and ensuring our clients are able to live their best life. We are looking for reliable and keen individuals who are looking to continuously grow within the healthcare sector.”

Other employers who have registered so far include: Keringle Park (Auckland) – Aged Care, Helen Anderson Trust (Christchurch) – Disability Support, Access Community Health (Napier/Hastings) – Home and Community Support, and IHC (Whangarei, Gisborne, Napier/Hastings, Wellington) – Disability Support.

There are current widespread workforce shortages across the health and wellbeing sectors. Paul Williams, Marketing and Communications General Manager at Careerforce, encourages teachers, careers advisors and parents to support young people into exploring career opportunities across these sectors.

Paul says, “we have employers who will support staff into training from day one. Just get on the career ladder and you will be surprised at how far you can go. You can achieve qualifications on-the-job and progress your career without needing to apply for a student loan.”

For students and job seekers attending SpeedMeet, Chloe’s advice is, “have an open mind, you never know, you may find an industry you are interested in that you never thought of before. Definitely bring a CV, as this allows the employer to be able to have good idea about your background and interests.”
