Job Description

Te tūnga | The Role
Our Support Workers have a vital role to play. This casual position will help to support 8 services within the wider Christchurch area. One shift you will provide care and support to rangitahi with difficult behaviours and encourage and motivate them to make good choices, and the next you'll be helping support adults with a mental health diagnosis, or who are on a recovery journey. This is a genuine opportunity to give back to YOUR community, to positively influence young people, and support tāngata whaiora on their wellness journey. You'll participate in physical activity with our young people by playing sports, taking part in gym activities, walks and outdoor pursuits. You'll help to support our tāngata whaiora by helping them with their studies, teaching them life skills such as cooking, art, music and cultural programmes and mentor them to make positive life choices. You will be working alongside a team of committed Clinical, Residential, Educational and Administrative team members who are all working hard for our tāngata whaiora. This position's salary scale is set by pay equity and dependant on qualification level pays between $22.10 and $27.00 per hour.
Māu | About You
We're looking for people who want to make a difference, have some life experience and won't take things personally. You'll have a positive outlook, be patient and show some resilience, as well as empathy, initiative and a proactive approach. You don't need to have a qualification, but you'll need to be willing to complete one with us and be physically able to keep up with teenagers. We're looking for someone with sound judgement and the skills to manage risk and make tough decisions. Some of our rangitahi have experienced trauma, and you'll need to have the ability to build rapport and assist in redirecting their behaviour. We don't have many prerequisites, but you will need to:
  • Have a full, clean, valid driver's licence
  • Meet the Children's Act safety checking and our vetting requirements
  • Be flexible and able to work a variety of different shifts (mornings, evenings, weekends and public holidays)
  • Having an understanding of and being comfortable with tikanga maori and te reo would be advantageous.
This is not a 9 to 5, Monday - Friday job. Our young people require wrap around support from us, and our Youth Support Workers do rostered shifts providing 24/7 coverage (including weekends and public holidays). This role is not for the faint-hearted! Some of the work can be extremely challenging so you will need to have resilience and passion for working with youth, be a flexible person with a positive attitude and exhibit the ability to build strong professional relationships with young people, whānau, staff and service providers. Casual work consists of no guaranteed hours, however is a great way to experience a variety of services and allows you to work flexibly. We aim to give a minimum of 24 hours' notice of any casual shifts available.
