Ngā Ratonga – Our services

Te Whare Whai Oranga is a community-based Youth Residential Service in Christchurch. The service is vital to providing therapeutic support for teenagers, working closely with our clinical partners and alongside whānau, Oranga Tamariki, and police youth aid.

Job Description

He kōrero mō te tūranga - The role

Our team of dedicated Youth Support Workers, engage with Rangatahi / Youth and encourages them to participate in their new home environment, as they learn to adapt and practice new ways of coping and communicating safely.

A typical day will see our team providing support to Tāne (males) who are currently in community placement. We encourage Rangatahi to engage and reconnect with their local community and cultural groups. You will walk alongside young people to overcome challenges they face in society, through the courts, police, and their own personal trauma.

As a support team, we aim to create healthy habits to help Rangatahi go on to achieve great things in the community as they journey into adulthood, becoming more aware of who they are. We prioritise empathy and understanding and provide support in self-care, awareness, and advocacy.

We are looking for someone who is keen on working permanent sleep over shifts for 24 hours per week. What is a sleepover shift? exactly that!!! You can have a rest and are only required to support staff should issues arise that requires another person to assist.

This role would suit someone that is looking to gain more experience working with Rangatahi / Youth within, looking for part time hours or to pick up additional work.

You are strong in tikanga Māori, energetic, fun, a great listener and excited to see young people succeed and make positive changes in their life.

You and the team will work together to ensure Rangatahi feel cared for, proud, heard, and strong. Being a consistent support through the good times and the tough days, we steer the waka together, restore mana and safety. Focusing on strengths using proven strategies, Rangatahi will achieve their personal recovery goals.

Your days will be spent encouraging community engagement and physical activity. You'll engage in activities by jumping on a mountain bike, discussing anime characters, playing video games, or grabbing a fishing rod. You'll participate in daily tasks such as, planning, shopping, and cleaning and champion for our Rangatahi at appointments.

To be successful in this role, its preferable that you have the following:

  • Experience in working with young men, with challenging behaviour
  • Resilience, with strong personal and professional boundaries
  • A decisive and confident approach to many challenges you will face
  • Ability to engage with diverse peoples from differing cultural backgrounds including Maori and Pasifika
