Ngā Ratonga | Our services:

We are a 4-bed, community based, Mental Health respite service for Rangatahi / Youth, ages 13-17, located in Hastings, in the sunny Hawkes Bay. We offer Rangatahi a spacious modern property, inclusive of a sensory room, in which we aim to provide a safe and nurturing space where Rangatahi feel protected for their short stay.

Gifted with the name Te Whare O Te Kāhu “The house of the Hawk” pays tribute to the many hawks that fly over the Heretaunga plains. The significance this name has on our service is that the hawk represents our Tipuna; a Kaitiaki, who protects, cares and watches over us all.

Job Description

He kōrero mō te tūranga | The Role:

As one of our Youth Support Workers you'll have a vital role to play. You'll provide care and support to the young people in our residences and encourage and motivate them to make good choices. This is a genuine opportunity to positively influence young people, help them grow and successfully transition back into the community.

This is not a 9 to 5 job, our young people require wrap around support from us. This means you'll be coaching young people through all life necessities, participating in physical activities, sports, or outdoor pursuits, and supporting their studies and teaching life skills. You'll be working as a key team member alongside Clinical, Residential, Educational and Administrative colleagues who are all committed and working hard for our young people.  

We have multiple positions available, 1 x Full time, permanent position to rostered shifts Monday - Sunday,

4 x casual positions which you can choose which shifts you work. (There are also optional sleepover shifts available should you want to pick up extra hours )

He kōrero mōu | About You

You'll have life experience, patience, empathy and wisdom to share with the ability to do so in a way that engages youth. You'll be the type of person that can instantly build rapport with young people who have experienced trauma, and you can redirect unhelpful behaviour. Additionally, you'll have plenty of resilience and you don't take things personally. Your initiative and proactive approach will be highly valued in your day-to-day work. You'll also need the flexibility to work varying shifts (mornings, evenings, weekends, and public holidays included). You'll also need:

  • A full, clean, valid driver's licence
  • Either have or be willing to complete a level 4 Qualification in Youth Work or Health & Wellbeing
  • Sound judgement with the skills to manage risk and make tough decisions
  • Meet the Children's Act safety checking and our vetting requirements
  • New Zealand citizenship or residency

Additionally, an understanding and confidence in tikanga Māori and te reo Māori would be advantageous.
