In our recent employer survey, our employers have highlighted that perhaps the most significant barrier to trainee success is their personal motivation.

Imagine how motivating it will be for your staff if in the first month or so of their training they can already get assessed, gain credits or complete unit standards. This will help set them with a strong momentum, and gives them a real confidence boost. We also know that trainees who get some credits early on are much more likely to complete the programme than those who don’t.

We always talk about the Careerforce programmes being based on the REAL approach; that is respectful, efficient, applied and living. We recognise that most of your staff are not picking up their tools for the first time. Accordingly, they should consider starting with one or two practical assessments first and get those credits recorded. It is also worth investing some time gathering and compiling ‘evidence of competencies’ to support those practical assessments.

If the REAL approach is something that has not been discussed with you yet, please let your Careerforce Workplace Advisor (CWA) know that you’d like more information.

We have developed some tools and other resources to support your staff and their assessors to get those early runs on the board. Here are a couple that you may want to ask your CWA about.

Imagine how motivating it will be for your staff if in the first month or so of their training they can already get assessed, gain credits or complete unit standards.

  1. 10 Credit Integrated Trainee Assessments

If you have staff enrolled in the New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Level 2) and New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Level 3), ask your CWA about the new integrated trainee assessments available. We looked at the most used unit standards across Health and Wellbeing level 2 and 3, and integrated the assessments to make them more efficient. If you think about communication and personal care for example, they fit together naturally.

This is especially useful if you have the following unit standards as part of your training plan:

  • 28518 Interact with people to provide support in a health or wellbeing setting (Level 2) 5 credits
  • 28545 Apply personal plan requirements to meet the needs of people in a health or wellbeing setting (Level 2) 5 credits
  • 23386 Support a person to meet personal care needs in a health or wellbeing setting (Level 3) 5 credits
  • 28557 Communicate to support people’s health and wellbeing (Level 3) 5 credits

We’ve already heard very positive feedback about these integrated assessments. They’re there for you to use. Have a chat with your CWA to get started.

  1. Apprenticeship Module: Respecting You

If you have staff enrolled in one of the apprenticeship programmes, they should start with the Respecting You module. Completion of this module will give them 10 credits, achieving unit standard 29455 Contribute to a culture of service quality, professionalism and ethical practice in a health or wellbeing setting.

This module involves gathering and compiling existing evidence that you as their employer would have seen, heard or filed that shows their competence in achieving this unit standard. Apprentices can find this module daunting and often think they won’t have the necessary evidence. It would be very helpful if you can spend some time with them in thinking about what the evidence could be and where to find it. The assessment also comes with an exemplar to help you.

For example, the apprentice needs to show evidence that they can contribute to continuous improvement in the organisation by providing constructive and relevant feedback. You may want to look at previous staff meetings where they may have made suggestions to improve processes or customer experience. This may have been covered in their performance appraisals or your organisation’s feedback forms.

Your apprentices would get a massive confidence boost if they can achieve this first module straight away.

As much as the industry training model is about being ‘employer led’, it is our certainly our aim to support everyone to complete their qualifications. That’s why we’re constantly thinking of ways to improve the employer and trainee experience. Please don’t hesitate to contact your CWA to find out more about the supports available.
