Do learners need to be in employment to train with Careerforce?

Careerforce supported trainees need to be working or volunteering within the health, mental health, aged care, disability, social services, youth work, cleaning or urban pest management professions and have the support of their employer.

How does the Careerforce training work?

Training is delivered via an employer led model.  This means the training is embedded in everyday workplace activities, and employers support trainees to learn on-the-job.  Assessment is carried out by assessors within the workplace.

How will I complete my learning assessments?

Your employer will decide if you are doing paper-based or online learning. If you are using paper-based assessments, then speak to your assessor about accessing the learning guides and trainee assessments from the Careerforce library. You will need to login to iportal – https://iportal.careerforce.org.nz/ to access the library. If you are learning online, you will receive an email with instructions on how to login to our learning tool, Aka Toi – https://akatoi.careerforce.org.nz/

What is Industry training and where will the training take place?

Industry training is also known as on-the-job training or workplace training. It’s designed for people like you, who are already employed and looking to have your knowledge and skills recognised, as well as remain up to date and advance your career. Industry training is different from classroom training. Your “classroom” is your workplace. You don’t necessarily need to sit down and listen to lectures and you can learn at your own pace.

How long will it take to finish the training?

Manage your work and training commitments as well as you can. Complete the work within the timeframe that was agreed between yourself, your assessor and employer. The average time needed for our training programmes ranges from 7 months to 12 months, and 18 months for our apprenticeship programmes. Remember that you have your workplace and the team at Careerforce supporting you, so please feel free to get in touch if you have any questions.

I do not know who my assessor is, how do I get started with my training?

It’s best to ask your manager about who your assigned assessor is. Then organise to speak with your assessor about how training will work. Ask for a training plan with a list of unit standards or modules that you must complete. Also discuss where you are going to access your learning and assessment resources. If you’re using paper-based learning, speak to your assessor about accessing them from the Careerforce library via iportal or if you are learning online, you would have received an email with instructions on how to log in to Aka Toi, our online learning platform.

I have completed my assessment, what happens next?

Submit your assessment(s) when you’re ready. Ask for and be open to feedback from your assessor.  It’s always good to know if you are on the right track. Once your assessor has marked your assessment(s), the assessor will submit your result(s) which are then sent to NZQA for registration. This can take up to 7 days for the unit standard(s) to appear on your NZQA Record of Achievement (ROA).

I need extra learning support, can you help me?

We want to ensure you are set up for success! There are plenty of organisations who offer learning support and resources for free. If you are having some challenges, it’s absolutely fine to seek help. Here’s a link to some organisations that offer additional learning support in literacy and numeracy: https://www.careerforce.org.nz/training/train-my-staff/literacy-numeracy/literacy-resources/

What to do if you're moving workplaces in the middle of your training programme?

Firstly, we hope you are moving to another workplace that supports Careerforce training programmes. If the workplace is not familiar with Careerforce, then we encourage them to contact us at 0800 277 486 and speak with a Workplace Advisor to discuss our qualifications.

If you are changing workplace and are part-way through a qualification, and it is your intention to complete the qualification, you will need to withdraw from the training programme with your current employer, and then re-enrol with your new employer.

However, before withdrawing from your training programme, it is recommended that you contact Careerforce to obtain an updated training progress report. This will show any completed assessments that have been reported with NZQA. If you find there are credits not yet registered, then you will need to follow this up promptly with your workplace assessor or manager.

It’s important to ensure that all completed assessments are registered before withdrawing from your training. You may wish to keep copies of your completed assessments for your records if using our paper-based resources.

If you are satisfied all assessments have been reported and wish to end your training, then please inform us by completing this online submission form https://www.careerforce.org.nz/training-agreement-termination/

To re-engage in training with your new workplace, a new training agreement will be required.

Please note if you are enrolling into the same training programme, any completed credits that were previously achieved will automatically be linked to your trainee record and will count towards the completion of your qualification with your new workplace.

When will I receive my certificate?

Please allow up to one month after your last unit standard has been reported by your assessor.  Your certificate will be sent directly to your employer. If you leave your workplace and would like your certificate sent to an alternative address, please contact us and let us know.

Why does it take three to four weeks to receive my certificate?

It will take this long as your results need to be recorded with the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) first.  NZQA will then notify Careerforce once they have registered your results and we can then arrange with the printers to have your certificate printed and sent to your workplace. While you wait for your certificate, you can check your official NZQA Record of Achievement (RoA). This records all the qualifications and unit standards you have completed in New Zealand.

Read instructions on how to access your RoA here

How do I enrol into my next programme?

Any programme you enrol in should be discussed with your employer. You might like to refer to this section of the Careerforce website to find out what you could be doing next. https://www.careerforce.org.nz/qualifications/
