Assessment – formally recognising trainee skills
Assessment is the formal process for recognising the skills of our trainees. It is usually carried out in the workplace with guides and other material provided by Careerforce.
Careerforce assessors are qualified, industry experienced experts who work with trainees to ensure their skills, experience and hard work are recognised in line with NZQA requirements.
Assessors oversee the formal assessment process and provide mentoring, either within their own workplace or independently. They are a vital part of maintaining the quality of Careerforce training.
Also important are the workplace observers who ensure that trainees transfer their learning into practice, benefiting the clients they serve.

Moderation is a continuous improvement activity for everyone involved. Careerforce moderated nearly 14,200 assessment samples between 2020 and 2025. Here’s what we’ve learned.
White Paper – Moderation 2020 – 2026
Moderation
All Careerforce assessors are required to go through an annual registration review. Part of this review is to ensure that each assessor successfully participates in annual moderation.
Moderation will be managed by the Quality Assurance Team to ensure greater integrity and consistency.
We have made a change for 2026 in terms of the process of moderation selection:
For Aka-Toi based assessments;
• You no longer need to submit assessment samples; we will select them for you.
If you are assessing paper-based assessments;
• We will be in contact to ask you what we would like you to send us.
Moderation will be dealt with by priority of registration review dates in the first instance.
Moderation is an assessor requirement. Learn why moderation is important.
