Careerforce was first established as Community Support Services ITO (CSSITO) in 1994, with the trading name changing to Careerforce in 2006. Following Industry Training Organisation (ITO) consolidation between 2011 and 2016, it merged with Social Services ITO (SSITO), Building Service Contractors ITO (BSCITO) and Health Ed Trust (HET).

On 1 September 2022, and as a result of the Reform of Vocational Education (RoVE), the ‘arranging workplace training’ function of Careerforce transitioned as a business division into the Work Based Learning (WBL) subsidiary of Te Pūkenga.  More information about the transition to Te Pūkenga is available here.
