Programme overview

This programme develops the skills and knowledge needed to support dentists with quality patient care and the running of a dental practice. This programme of industry training leads to the award of the New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Level 3) (Health Assistance Strand).

 

The programme includes developing and/or recognising the following competencies in your staff: 

  • Assisting dentists with oral healthcare procedures.
  • Preparing equipment and instruments required for oral healthcare procedures, including sterilisation procedures.
  • Describing tooth notation and anatomy, dental caries, periodontal disease and chart teeth and restorations.
  • Performing clerical and administrative duties.
  • Applying professional and ethical behaviour.
  • Assisting and preparing patients for treatment.
  • Applying infection prevention and control processes and procedures.

The Careerforce Health and Wellbeing Level 3 Dental Assistance Strand is for Dental or Oral Health Assistants employed in a range of settings including hospital, community, school and private practice.

Trainees will need to have the support of their employer to be able to enrol.

Trainees gain their skills and knowledge through on-job learning. The core value of industry-based training is that it sets people up with the right experiences, skills and knowledge. Trainees can earn while they learn, gain nationally-recognised qualifications, will benefit by gaining recognition of transferable skills and knowledge that is valued across the health and wellbeing sector.

Currently there are no enrolment fees for the Health and Wellbeing Level 3 Dental Assistance Strand qualification (valued at $230 NZD).

The employer usually pays the fees for staff to enrol in these programmes. To enrol in a Careerforce programme, you must be currently employed, and have the support of your employer.

As part of Budget 2020, the New Zealand Government, announced its Targeted Training and Apprenticeships Fund (TTAF). This fund is designed to encourage and support New Zealanders to undertake vocational education and training in targeted areas. The fund removes costs for a wide range of level 3 programmes through to December 2022.
