Skills recognition is a holistic approach to assessment that enables experienced staff to gain a qualification. Careerforce have introduced a Skills Recognition programme that will allow experienced youth leaders to achieve the National Certificate in Youth Work (Youth Leadership) (Level 3).

Skills Recognition is built on the idea that the learning required to achieve a qualification occurs naturally in the workplace. After 12 months a youth worker will already be involved in developing projects and supporting young people and youth groups. They don’t need to undertake the learning modules that form a traditional assessment approach, but rather they can put together a portfolio of evidence such as meeting notes, photographs, evaluations and reports.

A person undertaking Skills Recognition submits their portfolio to a Careerforce Assessor who engages them in a conversation to ensure that their skill, knowledge and attitude meet the requirements of the qualification. Evidence gathering and assessment usually takes between two and three months.
